da 888: Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that Javier Hernandez suffered ligament damage to his ankle in the 1-0 win over Aston Villa at the weekend, and that he may look to Danny Welbeck to fill the void against Basel.
The Mexico international was stretchered from the Villa Park pitch in The Red Devils’ victory over Alex McLeish’s men, and is now facing up to a month on the sidelines.
Ferguson has stated that he is glad to have Welbeck available again, and has not ruled out Dimitar Berbatov playing a role in Switzerland either.
“We think with Hernandez that it’s torn ankle ligaments unfortunately. That will keep him out for a month. We’re having a torrid time with injuries at the moment,” he told The Daily Mail.
“But Danny Welbeck came back at Villa, got some time on the pitch, and he gives us an option for Wednesday. He’s not had a lot of football recently so it’s something I’ll have to consider.
“But I thought Nani did all right down the middle and Antonio Valencia also did very well when he came on so we’ve got some options up front. Maybe Berbatov will be fit also,” he stated.
United travel to take on the Swiss champions in midweek knowing that they need at least a draw to secure qualification to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
